The Safe Place

Squeak & Jybow needed a safe place from the neighbors pit bull.  A place where they could go, be high and feel safe.  Jybow our ginger cat needed a place to heal from her repeated attacks from that dog.

Jybow is healing and is now able to walk, jump and sleep without fear.  She is still not completely healed, but she is doing much better.

The over-head piece of plywood sheeting gives the cats some shade from the hot sun, protects them from the rain, and next winter I can place their heated cathouse under it, in place of that other doghouse you see there in the enclosure.

The two cats chose the backporch themselves, so we know they like it.  To the right of the picture below they have an easy access through the railings to another larger doghouse.

Squeak is sitting on top of the open food box that Rick built to protect their dry cat food from the birds, which will eat it all up within minutes.  My cats are not hunters and will just lay there and watch the birds eat up all of their food, and somehow the blackbirds/starlings don't pay any attention to my cats being there.  Since Rick's three sided food enclosure has been built, the birds haven't found the food.

I took this picture through my backdoor, and as you can see, it is a small enclosure and only the cats have access to the steps down.  Dogs larger than the cats can't get up and we also can't get up or down our porch.  The only way that I can feed the cats is through my back door.  The cats nap there during the day.  There is always shade somewhere on the porch.  Sometimes they even go under the porch where it is cooler, but they are not safe there and they seem to know this, so they are always on guard.
